task
The block’s walls were showing signs of ageing and therefore deteriorating. We refurbished all 1,000m² of the external envelope whilst this part of the school was not occupied. Existing windows and doors were fragile and no longer weather-tight as a result of ageing and needed replacing. There were also some extra mechanical and electrical works that needed to be carried out.
approach
Central were appointed to refurbish this entire block to make it fit for purpose. The existing cladding was removed to be replaced with new cladding, and external doors and windows were also removed and disposed of correctly. An asbestos refurbishment survey was carried out by a specialist contractor. Existing services to be disturbed by works were isolated by a specialist Mechanical & Electrical contractor and reinstated following the works, these included flood lights.
solution
New walls were installed made up of Trespa cladding, breather membrane and Kingspan Kooltherm K12 insulation. The new cladding was fixed to a new timber studwork frame secured back to the existing structure. New double-glazed, top-hung casement aluminium windows were supplied and installed, all included trickle ventilation. New integrated cills and internal post laminated window boards were also installed. All doors were replaced with new, aluminium-faced doors. The Academy are now benefitting from an excellently refurbished educational block that was finished within budget and within the timescale.
