Badock Hall
The University of Bristol is undertaking a major investment programme into its buildings and infrastructure. As part of this work, roofing and windows at Badock Hall were refurbished to address issues that had arisen, due to condition and age. Our team delivered a comprehensive overhaul of the 1,400m² flat roofing system, including new waterproofing, rooflights, a mansafe system and window replacement.

task
The existing roof was at the end of its serviceable life, with embedded chippingsand extensive blisters. Other building fabric – like glazing, needed to be replaced. Asbestos Fascia and M&E units needed to be removed and decommissioned beforework commenced.
approach
Our team stripped areas to the metal deck, laying the groundwork for a comprehensive overhaul. Installation of a full built-up system included a VapourControl Layer, Cut-to-falls insulation, and an Alumasc Derbigum Olivine System. Additional work included replacing soffits, fascias, vents, and rooflights, and addressing safety and aesthetic issues. We finished by introducing a new handrailand permanent safety access ladder for enhanced security.
solution
Our work has led to the transformation of the building fabric, which is now completely watertight, and the integration of a CO2-neutralizing cap sheet aligning with the university’s net-zero requirements. We have improved thermal performance through a cut-to-falls system, also preventing future ponding water and enhanced safety with the replacement of windows, mitigating risks.
The main challenge was to safely deliver work over a live site, above student and canteen areas. We ensured no disruption to the running of the building and all H&S risks were mitigated successfully. As part of the project, we undertook the seamless removal and replacement of windows. The waterproofing system provides a lengthy 35-year system guarantee, ensuring long-term durability and assurance.
